About the Brookhaven, Georgia Area

Up Coming Events: The Brookhaven Arts Festival!!

Third Annual Taste of Brookhaven
Saturday, June 9th, 2008
Check out our cool website.

The 2008 Taste of Brookhaven was a delightful culinary experience. Bringing you some of Brookhaven's finest restaurants , the Brookhaven Arts Alliance and Presenting Sponsor Dan Woodley Communities assembled an evening to savor. This year diners were able to indulge their taste buds with a variety of favorite menu items and wine pairing from The Atlanta Cupcake Factory, Beyond The Bayou, Blue Ribbon Foods, The Cooks Warehouse, Haven, Hudson Grille, The Hungry Peach, Library Coffee Company, Market 212 Food & Wine Shop, M!X, Pub 71, The Real Chow Baby, Roy's, and Terra Grille as well as partake in an assortment of wines from Blackstock Vineyards, Peachtree Wine Merchants, Sherlock's Wine Merchants and Tiger Mountain Vineyards.

The historical and picturesque grounds of Brookhaven's own Oglethorpe University , was the backdrop for this neighborhood dinner party. Accompanying this unique dining experience was the chance to bid on the array of items donated to the silent auction. A few of the items included a Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Georgia Aquarium for (4) guests, artwork from the 2006 Brookhaven Arts Festival poster winner, Andre Nobrega a LX50 Vespa, diamond jewelry, Char-Broil Grill, and a Candlelight Dinner for 6 to Terra Grille. Jazz trio Odyesse set the musical tone for the event.

An added bonus to this year's Taste was the taping of Chef & The Fatman . Heard every Saturday on AM1160, Executive Chef Fred Genovese and the “Fat Man”, Kevin Jenkins, entertain audiences with a fast paced two hour cooking show. Chef Fred and Kevin have co-authored a cookbook, Chef and the Fatman the Red White and Blue Collar Cookbook as well as developed a line of seasonings called Chef and the Fatman Love Rub and Seasonings. The Taste of Brookhaven not only offered you the opportunity to taste fine wine but to learn about it as well. Certified Wine Educator Gil Kulers held a class during the evening.

All proceeds from this event are benefiting the mission of the Brookhaven Arts Alliance, to enrich the Brookhaven community by providing arts education and cultural events for residents and visitors. We are diligently working towards our goal of an Arts Center with gallery space and classes.

A Personal Note of Thanks from the Director

I want to congratulate all Sponsors, Restaurants & Volunteers for coordinating an overwhelmingly successful event for the 2007 Taste of Brookhaven! I have received nothing but words of praise for all your hard work in making this year's event even better than last year. Each of you possesses such unique talents and enthusiasm. Your love to improve our community really showed! My gratitude holds more appreciation than words can express but know that I am very proud of our team and hope you realize how valuable each one of you are to the ongoing success of the Brookhaven Arts Alliance. And a special thank you to our patrons who continue to show your support for the Brookhaven community. I look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Congratulations,

Real Estate Tips
Tax Considerations >New 1031 Exchange Rules

One of the most popular "tax deferring" strategies for real estate owners who are selling one property and acquiring another is the use of Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code. It is an effective way to defer paying income tax on capital gain generated by the sale of a property when you intend to reinvest the proceeds in a similar, "like-kind" property. Almost any kind of real property is considered "like-kind" with any other real property.

A recently enacted law closes what was considered a loophole in the Section 1031 rules. In some cases, owners of investment real estate have used the 1031 Exchange to swap their investment property for real estate that could be readily converted to an owner-occupied residential property. After the exchange, they made the property into their principal residence, lived in it for a couple of years, then sold it. Now the American Job Creation Act of 2004 has ruled that properties converted from a 1031 exchange property into a residence must be held and used as a principal residence for at least five years to qualify for the tax exemption. Otherwise, the basic tax-deferring benefits of 1031 exchanges remain the same.

Consult your tax advisor for more detailed information.
